Leipzig Revisited

  • St Peter's Church Leigham Court Road London, SW16 2SD United Kingdom (map)

Between 1923 and 1930, the Wind Quintet of the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra made a series of pioneering sound recordings. They comprise the most substantial collection of recordings made by a wind chamber ensemble of this period and cover a huge range of music, some arranged for the group by its bassoonist Gunther Weigelt.

In a departure from our normal repertoire, Boxwood & Brass will be performing three works from this amazing discography. By studying the recordings and using early-20th century German instruments, we are attempting to understand better the playing style of these musicians and their approach to ensemble.

The concert will include Weigelt's arrangement of Mozart's beautiful Adagio K 411, and quintets by August Klughardt and Paul Hindemith, the latter composed just a few years before the Leipzig Gewandhaus Quintet recorded it.

Mozart arr. Weigelt: Adagio K 411
Hindemtih: Kleine Kammermusik, Op. 24/2
Klughardt: Quintet in C Op. 79

Flute: Georgia Browne
Oboe: Rachel Chaplin
Clarinet: Emily Worthington
Horn: Anneke Scott
Bassoon: Robert Percival
